New platforms in 2026–2027
Lesson 3 of 16 in the course “Marketing 2027”. Free, with animations and a quiz.
Case: ads in ChatGPT
You’ve learned to read the numbers. Now let’s talk about where ads can even run, because the map changed a lot in 2026. In February 2026 OpenAI started testing ads in ChatGPT. In under 200 days they hit a $1 billion annual revenue run rate, and advertisers got their own pay-per-click Ads Manager. OpenAI’s key rules: ads are labeled and kept separate from the AI’s answer, ads don’t change the answer itself, and advertisers can’t see a person’s chats with the bot. The ad is matched to the topic of the conversation. For businesses it’s a new place where people have already described in their own words what they need.
Google: ads right in the AI answer
Google is rebuilding too. At Google Marketing Live in May 2026 the company showed ads inside AI Mode: a search mode where instead of ten links the AI gives a full answer. The ad is matched to the person’s exact question. For advertisers there’s AI Max: campaigns that AI expands to similar and conversational queries, and you can steer them in plain text with AI Brief. Google is also testing “business agents” for leads: people ask questions right inside the ad, and an AI answers on the company’s behalf and collects contact details. For now it’s rolling out to specific niches like education and real estate.
TikTok: buying and creative are separate
TikTok has two things people often mix up. Smart+ is automated buying: AI decides who sees the video, where and at what price. Symphony is a set of AI tools for the videos themselves: video generation, digital avatars, translation and voiceover into other languages. In 2026 TikTok added Reference to Video to Symphony: give it a product photo and AI makes a video with it. Remember the difference, it’ll matter in lesson 9: you can use one without the other. For example, shoot the video yourself and hand the buying to Smart+, or the other way around.
Existing demand or demand you create
Platforms come in two types. First: the person is already looking. They type “buy oversized hoodie” into Google or ChatGPT, and your job is to show up in the answer. That’s catching ready demand. Second: the person is just scrolling TikTok, Reels or Threads and wasn’t thinking about hoodies. Your video has to spark the want. Almost nobody searches a new brand by name, so Nika starts with the second type: short videos in the feed. She’ll add search once people start talking about “Pushka” and typing it in.
An early platform: chance and risk
Whoever arrives first on a new platform often gets attention cheaper: fewer rivals in the auction, and nobody’s tired of the format yet. But there’s a flip side. Few tools and reports, rules that change, and access that doesn’t open in every country at once: OpenAI, for example, opens its ChatGPT Ads Manager region by region. So the rule is simple: most of the budget goes where things already work, and the new platform gets a 10–20% test. After a couple of weeks compare CPA with your main platform and decide whether to move money over.
Platform = where your people are
Don’t chase the trendy platform. First ask: where does my customer make the decision? Clothes and anything that looks good usually sell through feed videos: Reels and TikTok. Urgent “near me” services like repairs or a lawyer get searched on Google and maps. Complex choices, where you want to compare and ask follow-up questions, increasingly go through ChatGPT and AI Mode. Services for companies live on LinkedIn. These are starting guesses, not laws. Yours may differ, and that’s fine: that’s exactly why we count CPA on each platform separately.
Do it yourself: 1 main + 1 test
Take your product and answer five questions. Is your customer already searching for a solution or just scrolling? Which platform is the main one: it gets 80–90% of the budget. Which is the test one: it gets 10–20%. Is it available in your country: check the platform’s own help pages, not other people’s posts. And which number will you check in two weeks, most likely CPA. One main platform and one test beats five at once: on a small budget the money gets spread thin and no platform has time to learn.
Check yourself
- Where should Nika start?
Correct answer: The feed: TikTok and Reels with short videos. The brand is new and nobody searches it by name yet. Clothes sell well on video, and the feed is where you spark the want in people who weren’t thinking about hoodies. - What’s the right way to try ChatGPT ads?
Correct answer: Check access in his country and give it 10–20% of budget as a test. A new platform is a chance at cheaper attention, but also a risk: few tools, changing rules, access opening region by region. A test with a small slice of budget gives you both the chance and protection. - Which is true about ChatGPT ads?
Correct answer: Ads are labeled and kept separate from the AI’s answer. Under OpenAI’s rules, ads are labeled, sit separately and don’t affect the answer. Advertisers get no access to chats, and the ad is matched to the topic of the conversation. - What do Smart+ and Symphony do?
Correct answer: Smart+ buys impressions, Symphony helps make videos. Smart+ is the buying layer: who sees it, where and at what price. Symphony is the creative layer: video generation, avatars, translations. You can use them separately.
