The 2026 model map

Lesson 3 of 22 in the course “AI Video, No Flops”. Free, with animations and a quiz.

Who’s strong at what

There’s no universally best model; each has its strength. As of October 2026 the picture looks like this. Kling 3.0 from Kuaishou launched in February and is known for lifelike body motion. ByteDance’s Seedance topped the rankings over the summer, and version 2.5 takes up to 50 references and clips up to 30 seconds. Google’s Veo 3.1 and the new Gemini Omni are strong at speech and sound. Runway is good for edits, and Wan is an open model for your own computer. This map will go stale, so next we learn to choose rather than memorise.

Aggregator studios

Buying five subscriptions is expensive. So many people work through studios like Higgsfield: Kling, Seedance, Veo and others are all inside, and you pay with shared credits. On top, the studio adds its own tools: Cinema Studio 4.0, released in August 2026, has 30+ camera moves, a lens choice and clips up to 30 seconds. The upside is comparing models on one task quickly. The downside is that credits burn faster than you think, and you need to read the terms.

The Sora lesson

OpenAI’s Sora 2 launched on 30 September 2025 and was seen as the benchmark for physics. On 24 March 2026 OpenAI announced the shutdown: the app was switched off on 26 April and the API on 24 September 2026. Anyone who built their whole process on Sora alone was left without a tool. The takeaway for Mira: keep prompts, references and finished clips on her side, and build her process so the model can be swapped in an evening.

How to read rankings

The most honest rankings work like an arena: people are shown two clips from the same prompt without being told which model is which, and they pick the better one. From thousands of such votes an Elo rating is calculated, like in chess. Artificial Analysis works this way, for example. But the leader changes almost every month, and many “best model of the year” articles are written by the sellers themselves. Check the date and the source, and test on your own task.

What a second costs

Video is billed by the second. For example, Veo 3.1 Standard on the Gemini API costs about $0.40 per second at 720p or 1080p. One 8-second clip is $3.20. Sounds cheap, but remember the takes? Five tries is already $16, twenty is $64, which is more than Mira’s whole budget. That’s why later in the course you’ll learn the trick: cheap drafts, and only the best one in expensive quality.

Pick for the task

Instead of asking “which model is best”, ask “what matters most in my shot”. Running, dance and sport: start with Kling or motion transfer from a video. A person talking to camera: Veo. Lots of references and a long scene: Seedance. Fixing an existing video: Runway or Genjutsu in Higgsfield. Need full control and have a powerful GPU: Wan. That’s a starting point; the final call comes from a test.

The director’s kit

Mira has four things that won’t disappear along with any service. Notes with prompts that worked. A reference folder: the model’s face, the hoodie from every side, the locations. The habit of running one prompt in 2–3 models and comparing. And a simple sheet: model, price, how many takes a usable clip took. In a month that sheet will tell her more than any review.

Check yourself

  1. Mira needs a clip of the model doing a backflip. Where does it make sense to start?
Correct answer: Kling or motion transfer from a real backflip video. In a backflip, body motion is everything. Kling is known for exactly that, and transferring motion from a real video gives the model correct jump physics.
  2. Mira reads “The best video model of 2026”, written by a service that sells that model. How should she treat it?
Correct answer: Check the date, compare with an independent arena and test it herself. The seller has an interest. That doesn’t mean they’re lying, but you have to check: the date, an independent ranking like an arena, and your own test on your task.
  3. Mira has $50. An 8-second clip costs $3.20. Why can’t she count on 15 finished clips?
Correct answer: One usable clip takes several takes. Only one or two in each batch of takes is usable. If a clip takes 5 tries, $50 covers about 3 finished clips, not 15.
  4. Mira’s favourite service announced it shuts down in a month. What saves her work?
Correct answer: Her own copies of prompts, references and clips. Prompts and references move to any model in an evening. That’s how people who kept everything on their side survived Sora’s shutdown.
