Edits instead of regenerating
Lesson 15 of 22 in the course “AI Video, No Flops”. Free, with animations and a quiz.
Which tool for which problem
Beginners hit “generate again” for any mistake. It’s a lottery: along with the problem, everything that turned out well goes too. Pros diagnose first. Junk in one area: edit that area. Good motion but the wrong place or object: edit the finished video while keeping the motion. Good motion but you need a different style: restyle. The shot is short or you need slow-mo: extend and interpolate. And only if everything is broken at once, body, light and story, do you generate again. In this lesson we’ll go through each tool.
Region edit
Picture a perfect shot: Mira laughs, the light is golden, the motion is alive, but the sign behind her has scribbles instead of letters. Regenerating means risking everything for one sign. A region edit works differently: you mask only the problem spot and write what should be there, for example “a clean pink neon strip, no text”. Everything outside the mask stays as it was. It’s the video version of inpainting from image editors. The rule: the mask is slightly bigger than the problem, and the prompt describes only the replacement, not the whole scene again.
Editing a finished video
Sometimes the problem isn’t a spot but a whole element: the wrong location, the wrong object in hand, while the motion and camera are perfect. Tools for editing finished videos exist for that. For example, on 1 September 2026 Higgsfield released Genjutsu: it changes objects, places or characters in an existing video and can transfer motion. The logic is simple: take a good shot, say what to replace, and get a version with the same motion and the same camera. That’s how Mira turned one rooftop shot into three versions, rooftop, beach and underground car park, while capturing the motion only once.
Restyle
Restyle changes the look of the whole video but keeps the original motion. On 30 September 2026 Higgsfield released Genjutsu Restyle, which does exactly that. Why would a brand care? One good rooftop dance becomes an anime teaser for TikTok, a claymation version for stories and the original realistic one for the ad. The pose, timing and body physics are already polished; you only change the “wrapper”. Important: if the feet slid in the source, they’ll slide in the anime too. Restyle carries the motion over whole, mistakes included, so get the physics right first and then play with style.
Extend, slow down, upscale
Three more tools save regenerations. Extend: the model adds a few seconds to a shot, continuing the motion, when you’re short on length. Interpolation: if you simply slow a 24-frame video down 2× in the editor, you get 12 frames per second and stutter; interpolation draws the in-between frames, and slow-mo comes out smooth. Upscale: raises the resolution to 4K and sharpens details. One saving rule for all three: apply them only to final, chosen shots. Upscaling drafts is like sending every sketch to a print shop.
The editor finishes the rest
Even the best shots become an ad only in an editor: CapCut, DaVinci Resolve (it has a free version) or Premiere. There you trim the start and end of a shot if they have artifacts: models often “warm up” in the first fraction of a second. You match the colour of all shots so the video looks whole. You build the sound from lesson 7: ambience, foley, one licensed track. You add captions, the tracked logo from lesson 13 and an end card with the drop date. Half the “wow” in a good ad isn’t generation but editing.
Editing versus the lottery
Let’s wrap up the level. Regenerating is a lottery: a new shot brings new mistakes, and a good motion, light or emotion can be lost for good. Editing is targeted: you change only the problem, and everything good is kept. Plus edits are usually faster than running new drafts. So the order is: first diagnose with the map from the first slide, then the smallest tool that solves the problem, and only as a last resort a new generation. Together with the character folder, the storyboard and the grid check, this is the professional process that separates a brand from random AI content.

- A perfect shot: light, emotion, motion. But the sign behind Mira has scribbles. What should she do?
Correct answer: Region edit: mask the sign and prompt only the replacement. The problem is in one area, so the fix is targeted. Light, emotion and motion stay untouched. - The rooftop dance came out perfect, but a partner wants the same version on a beach. What should she pick?
Correct answer: A video edit: replace the location while keeping the motion and camera. The motion and camera are already polished. Only the place changes, so a video edit fits, not a new generation. - Mira needs slow-mo of a jump from a 5-second shot. What gives a smooth result?
Correct answer: Frame interpolation, then slowing down. Interpolation draws the in-between frames, so the slowed motion stays smooth. - At what stage should she upscale to 4K?
Correct answer: At the end, only for the chosen final shots. Upscaling costs credits and time. Spend them only on what will definitely go into the video.
