Rocket Pool: staking run by thousands of people

Lesson 30 of 58 in the course “Crypto”. Free, with animations and a quiz.

Operators risk their own money

In Rocket Pool, validators are run not by a handful of companies but by thousands of independent people around the world. Each operator puts up their own bond. Since the Saturn 1 upgrade in February 2026, 4 ETH is enough, and depositors like you add the other 28 ETH for a full validator. If the operator makes a mistake or cheats, their own 4 ETH burns first. That is the safety net: the operator has something to lose.

rETH gains value instead of multiplying

Depositors get rETH. Unlike stETH, the number of rETH in your wallet does not change; instead each rETH is worth more ETH over time. So 1 rETH is already worth more than 1 ETH. That is handy: no wrapper is needed for DeFi, and in some countries tax tracking is simpler because the balance does not change every day. Operators take part of the rewards as a commission, and the rest goes to rETH holders.

Lido or Rocket Pool: which to pick

Lido is bigger, stETH has the most liquidity, and a DAO picks the operators. Rocket Pool is smaller but more decentralized: anyone who posts a bond can become an operator. It is healthier for Ethereum when staking is spread across many participants. Many people split their ETH between the two protocols, so one failure cannot take everything. Their yields are close, usually within a few tenths of a percent.

How to get in: three options

The simplest: open stake.rocketpool.net from a bookmark, connect your wallet and swap ETH for rETH. Sometimes rETH is cheaper on Uniswap, so compare the rate. If you want to go deeper and have 4 ETH, you can become an operator and earn commission on other people’s ETH, but it is real work: a server online 24/7, updates and monitoring. Whatever you pick, check the site address first, just like in the security lesson.

Check yourself

  1. How much of their own ETH does a Rocket Pool operator put up after Saturn 1?
Correct answer: 4 ETH. A 4 ETH bond, and depositors add the 28 ETH needed for a full validator. The operator loses their bond first.
  2. A year later you have the same amount of rETH. That means…
Correct answer: All good: the rETH to ETH rate went up. With rETH the yield is in the rate: same count, but each rETH buys more ETH.
