ETFs and big money
Lesson 28 of 39 in the course “Crypto”. Free, with animations and a quiz.
What a spot ETF is
An ETF is an exchange-traded fund. Its shares are bought on a stock exchange through a regular brokerage account, just like stocks. A spot bitcoin ETF uses investors' money to buy real BTC and hold it. "Spot" means the asset itself, not a contract on its price. This is how bitcoin gets money from those who do not want to deal with crypto exchanges and wallets, for example pension and investment funds.
How the money reaches BTC
The chain is simple. An investor buys ETF shares in a brokerage account. If people want more shares than exist, the fund issues new ones and uses the money to buy BTC. If shares are sold en masse, the fund redeems them, meaning it buys them back and cancels them, and sells BTC. Names like IBIT or FBTC in the picture are tickers, the short exchange codes of such funds.
Inflow and outflow
Inflow: during the day investors bought more fund shares than they sold. Money came into the fund, and it buys more BTC. That is extra demand, and it supports the price. Outflow: more shares were sold, the fund sells BTC, and extra supply hits the market. Flow data is published every trading day in dollars. A minus sign in front of the number means outflow.
Read the streak, not one day
One day decides almost nothing: a big fund may have just been shuffling money. Look at the streak. For example: five days of inflows in a row say more about steady demand than one huge day. Several days of outflows in a row: demand is weakening. And remember: flows are just one factor among many, and price can move against them.
